Technology is changing the world at an ever increasing pace. One simple example is the way we relate to information today. Until recently, searching for information meant relying almost exclusively on traditional search engines. Today, more and more people use artificial intelligence tools that do not simply point to sources, but directly formulate answers, summarize information, and generate content. In this context, universities have a responsibility to explain these transformations, place them into perspective, and bring them closer to people.
At Politehnica University of Timișoara, this mission has taken shape in recent years through Tech Talks by UPT, a project that has grown with each edition and established itself as one of the most relevant platforms for dialogue on technology, society, and the future. For UPT Rector Florin Drăgan, Tech Talks reflects a broader vision of the role the university plays in society and of the way knowledge must be carried forward beyond lecture halls, laboratories, and academic circles. Each edition has been conceived as part of a coherent construction, in which the proposed themes respond to the major questions of the present and open essential conversations about the direction in which we are heading.
From the very beginning, Tech Talks by UPT has created a space in which technology is viewed in direct connection with everyday life, education, the economy, and the way society evolves. Looking back at the conference’s journey, this direction becomes very clear. The first editions brought to the forefront the way technology was already present around us and shaping daily life. In the years that followed, the conversation expanded toward increasingly bold topics, closely connected to the major questions of our time: artificial intelligence, the profound transformations brought by new technologies, the frontiers of quantum research, and, more recently, the need to rethink the place of the human being in a future marked by automation.
This evolution also reflects the way Politehnica University of Timișoara has chosen to be present in the public sphere: as an institution of education and research, but also as an active voice in the conversation about the future. Through Tech Talks, UPT brings complex themes before the public, themes that are essential to the world we live in, and turns them into subjects of reflection that are accessible, timely, and relevant.

And this exercise requires bringing knowledge closer to people in a way that is rigorous, relevant, and alive.
For Florin Drăgan, the goal is for Politehnica University of Timișoara to be a place where specialists are formed, academic excellence is generated, and clarity is offered in an increasingly complex world. In a context in which technology advances faster than the pace at which its implications are understood, the university assumes the role of mediator between discovery and society. From the way artificial intelligence is changing how we learn, work, and communicate, to the speed with which certain skills become outdated and need to be replaced by new ones, the major transformations of the present require credible points of reference and real dialogue. Ideas must not only be produced, but also explained.
In this sense, Tech Talks by UPT can also be read as an expression of UPT’s identity today: a modern university, connected to the major global themes, attentive to the dynamics of the contemporary world, and aware that innovation requires ethics, dialogue, and a deeply human understanding of progress. Ultimately, the stake goes beyond technology itself and concerns the way we choose to live with it, use it, and integrate it into society.
The journey of Tech Talks, from its first edition to the present, thus expresses a coherent vision of university leadership, in which academic excellence naturally meets openness toward the public, and the major themes of the future become real opportunities for conversation and reflection. Through Tech Talks by UPT, Rector Florin Drăgan is, in essence, proposing a culture of dialogue about the future.
In an age in which technology is changing the rules at great speed, this is perhaps one of the most important roles a university can assume: to help society understand change and relate to it in a lucid, responsible, and intelligent way.
