Tech Talks by UPT brings to the forefront Brendan Barry, CTO of Equal1, who is radically transforming the quantum computing industry with silicon-based technology. In a field dominated by quantum systems requiring near absolute zero temperatures and extremely complex infrastructure, Equal1 has made a remarkable breakthrough: the functional demonstration of a 6-qubit array fabricated on a CMOS process compatible with silicon-germanium (SiGe). Under Brendan's technical leadership, this achievement marks a crucial step towards the democratization of quantum computing, utilizing the already existing infrastructure from the semiconductor industry. Former Vice President of Engineering at Movidius (acquired by Intel in 2016), Brendan led the development of three generations of Myriad processors, introducing dedicated hardware engines for AI, DSP, and computer vision. At Intel Movidius, he served as Director for the development of VPUs, contributing to the next-generation AI platforms of the American tech giant. At Equal1, Brendan now leads a top-tier team in silicon development, with the mission of integrating quantum and classical components into an efficient, scalable, and accessible hybrid system. At Tech Talks by UPT, Brendan revealed the behind-the-scenes of this groundbreaking discovery, explaining how quantum integration through silicon can deliver unprecedented performance and efficiency in real-world applications. Equal1 is also a partner in the new Master's program in Quantum Computing launched in 2025 by Politehnica University Timișoara, further strengthening the collaboration between industry and academia.
